Agitation had plagued me from the moment I’d woken up. I’d slept badly, tossing and turning on my mattress on the floor, until I’d given up on sleep altogether. I’d found my fishing rod and wandered down the path to the lake as the sun peeked over the horizon, but sitting on the end of the dock with a line in the water hadn’t brought me any peace.

There were two things I couldn’t get out of my head. The first one being what Mae and I had done at this very spot. If I closed my eyes, I could still feel the wet warmth of her pussy clenching down on my fingers while she came.

My dick twitched. I’d pushed her away again, because I had to, but I’d hated every moment since. Seeing her at work was a special kind of torture I’d created for myself but one that I now had to live in, because the alternative—getting involved with her while she worked in the prison system—wasn’t something I could handle.

I wouldn’t lose anyone else I cared about.

But she wasn’t the only source of my sleepless night. I hadn’t seen Heath in a week since he’d been sent to solitary. He’d be out today. By the time I got to work, he’d be back in General Population, and I wouldn’t be able to avoid talking to him any longer.

Thing was, I didn’t even want to. I wanted to see him. I needed to explain.

That was why this beautiful lake, with the sun rising over it, did nothing for me. The turmoil inside me wasn’t going away without facing it.

I got to work hours earlier than I was scheduled, impatient to make things right. The new warden looked up as I passed his office. “Pritchard.”

I pushed down my annoyance at the interruption and backtracked a few steps. Heath wasn’t going anywhere, and I was already on thin ice with the new guy after my disappearing act. “What’s up, boss?”

“You’re early. I’m not paying you for that, you know.”

“Didn’t ask you to. But I’m gonna work anyway.”

“Good. I like your attitude. You had me worried for a bit there, when you disappeared without word, but I’m not heartless. I know what it’s like to need a moment after a riot. Been in too many of them myself.”

I somehow couldn’t imagine the drill-sergeant-like man feeling much of anything, but I could take his word for it.

“It’s good you’re here, though. I’ve just had word that we’ll be getting some new prisoners and they’re due in any moment.”

I cringed. There was so little room, the prison already at capacity. Being overcapacity wasn’t anything new, but it made things more difficult. But I’d almost expected it, seeing as we suddenly had so many new staff members. The powers that be loved nothing more than loading a prison up as far as they possibly could. “Yes, sir. I’ll get things prepared. How many?”

“Twenty-three.”

I gaped at him. “We don’t have room for an extra twenty-three prisoners.”

“I know.
